Dream Season Ends with Elite Eight Finish

At some point it had to come to come to an end and, although another banner will not be hung, the varsity girls soccer team will go down in school history for their accomplishments this season.  The Wolfpack ended the year with a 1-0 loss to Normal West in their second IHSA Elite Eight appearance in four years.  With a 26-2-1 overall record and 7-0-0 record in the GCAC, the Pack finished the year ranked in the top ten in both the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times, 11th in the Midwest Region and 39th in the country.  The varsity rewrote the record books this year as they won their 4th GCAC Red Championship, 2nd Catholic Cup Championship, 9th straight IHSA Regional Championship, 4th straight IHSA Sectional Championship and first ever IHSA Super-Sectional Championship.  Coach Carpenter described this group best - “This team was poetry on the pitch!”

Wolfpack End Season with Strong Individual Finishes (Part 1)

The Wolfpack boys track team fell just short of its season goal, placing second for the second straight year at its IHSA Chicago - Hanson Stadium sectional, scoring 112 points to Lane Tech’s 136.  The team had five sectional champions.  Junior Sal Salvato won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.96 seconds and then anchored the 4x400 relay, taking the baton in second place and then running a sub-50 second leg for a narrow victory in 3 minutes and 27.33 seconds. He was joined on that relay by sophomore Alcaeos Bolaris, senior co-captain Tom Kelleher and junior Michael Kertez. Senior co-captain Michael Kuntz won the 1600 meters in a time of 4 minutes 35.8 seconds (coach’s time) with a strong 62-second final lap.  It was the third sectional championship for Kuntz who won the 3200-meter run the previous two years.  Earlier in the meet Kuntz teamed with Kelleher, senior Jack Glascott and senior co-captain Neil Kelleher to win the 4x800 meter relay in 8:18.47.  Senior co-captain Reid Powell was the third individual champion at the meet for Ignatius as he pole vaulted 12 feet 6 inches to defeat sophomore teammate Jeremiah Sheehy who cleared a personal best of 12 feet even to qualify for the IHSA state meet as the second place finisher.  Ignatius had a fifth individual qualifier for the state meet as senior Ikedichi Ofor placed second in the triple jump (44 feet 3 inches). Ofor qualified for the state meet all four years at Ignatius. There were also some close and heartbreaking qualifying calls for the team including the 4x100 relay of Salvato, senior co-captain Tom Respondi, Kertez and senior Carey Ransone, which placed third in a strong time of 43.80 seconds.

Wolfpack End Season with Strong Individual Finishes (Part 2)

“Every day on the way to practice we pass by the banners that celebrate the national champions of 1933 and the 35 Catholic league champion teams from Ignatius. That is a lot to live up to,” said Coach Ed Ernst at the team’s end of year banquet, also noting that Ignatius has still never won a sectional championship.  “We were fifth in the Catholic League this year, and we did not put a sectional championship on the banner.  But this group of seniors set five school records at the frosh soph level. They ran outstanding times and recorded strong results in the jumping events over the last four years.  It has to be one of the best teams of the last 20 years at least.”  Pole vaulter Sheehy was recognized as the most improved member of the team and Tom Kelleher, who battled a knee injury for four years to become a key member of two outstanding relay teams, was awarded the Coach’s Award for hard work and dedication to his team.  Salvato, whose 15.1 seconds effort barely missed the school record in the 110-meter hurdles and is closing in on the 300 hurdles record with his best of 39.72, was the team MVP.

Wolfpack Place 3rd at Nationals

Ignatius Chicago Crew had two boats (one boys varsity 4+ boat and one girls varsity 4+ boat) qualify for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Nationals in Oak Ridge, TN last weekend.  They competed against the top high school rowers in the United States.  The girls 4+ boat pulled out a major feat, finishing third in the nation.  The girls took third by .2 seconds and were .8 seconds out of second place.  The boys finished off at Nationals by coming in sixteenth in the nation.  With both boats finishing in the Top 20 in the nation, ICC closed the book on another amazing season.  With six of the eight rowers and coxswains in the two boats being seniors, they have left a lasting impression on ICC as one of the nation's best.  Having boats place in the Top 5 in the nation for two years in a row proves that hard work and dedication can produce winning results.  Congratulations to the girls 4+ boat of Meg Hlousek, Bridget Dempsey, Kate Monahan, Allie Boyaris and Dorothy Kopcyzk (coxswain) and the boys 4+ boat of Andrew Wall, Nate Wooton, Matt Franz, Andrew Greybar and Drew Coogan (coxswain).

IHSA Super-Sectional Champions!!!!

On a beautiful Memorial Day Monday, the Wolfpack varsity girls soccer team checked their biggest goal off the list and as they say, “since you’re at the dance, dance!”  After a thrilling 3-1 victory over Glenbrook South, the Pack returns to the Elite Eight for the second time in four years after winning their first ever IHSA Super-Sectional title.  The Wolfpack will now face Normal West on Friday, May 30, at 6:00 p.m. at North Central College.

With a huge crowd on hand, the Wolfpack stunned GBS just past the five minute mark of play on a gorgeous cross shot from Alex Yorke (15 assists) to a full striding Kelly Price (17 goals) who headed the first goal of the game in.  With each team working the ball from end line to end line, the long grass and pace of the game did not seem to faze the Wolfpack.  The Titans tied the game around the mid point of the first half but the Pack stormed right back as Lizzie Kern (3 goals) scored off a corner kick from Nicole Denenberg (15 assists).  Although the clock seemed to be broken and running in reverse, the Pack ended the first half up 2-1.

The second half was anchored by the outstanding performance of Ashlee Hunt (100 saves) with eight saves on the night and the back line defense of Clare Devitt, Kate Ransdell and Ellie Gravenhorst.  The Wolfpack's intense training paid off as GBS looked to lose a step in the second half while midfielders Jayne Eslinger and Julie Govedarica seemed to cover more ground than Lewis and Clark, logging all 80 minutes.  Yorke gave the Pack the insurance goal they needed, scoring her 9th of the year, with 20 minutes left to play on a cross from Alison Smith (7 assists) and the Super-Sectional plaque was theirs.  The 2008 Wolfpack have outscored their opponents 124-8, have a new team win record at 26-1-1 overall, are Catholic Cup champions, GCAC champions, IHSA Regional champions, IHSA Sectional champions and IHSA Super-Sectional champions. Welcome to the dance!

Wolfpack Upset Shamrocks in Sectional Semi Finals

The boys volleyball team defeated St. Patrick Friday night in the Saint Ignatius Sectional Semi-Final 25-18, 20-25, 25-18.  "They were a very good team that was also very young.  We made fewer mistakes in the match, and that was the difference" said Johnston.  Peter Doerrer led the team with 16 kills and 7 digs while also getting 2 blocks.  Matt Fahey (10 kills, 2 blocks) and Colin Rodnick (23 assists, 2 aces, 3 blocks) also played exceptionally well for Ignatius.  Connor Quinn did a great job defending against St. Pat's "go-to" outside hitter by leading the team with 4 blocks.  Doug Klein (4 digs) and Brendan Lynch (2 aces, 3 digs) also had solid nights for the Wolfpack. For the second year in a row the Wolfpack will play in the IHSA Sectional final for a chance to go down-state.  The match will be tonight, 7 pm, here at Saint Ignatius against #1 OPRF.
