Sheehy 9th at IHSA State Meet Pole Vault

Friday preliminaries  at the IHSA boys’ state track meet on May 28th started about as badly as possible for the Wolfpack.  Senior Jeremiah Sheehy, seeded for a top medal in the pole vault, broke his pole in three pieces on a warm-up jump, a freak accident.   Sheehy had cleared 14 feet and 3 inches on that pole to win at the sectional meet the week before.  Moving to a bigger pole which he had practiced using only once, Sheehy missed twice at the first competition height of 13 feet before clearing on his third and final attempt.  Then he missed twice at 13 feet and 9 inches before clearing the third time to qualify for the finals competition on Saturday.  On Saturday, Sheehy struggled again, clearing 13 feet and 6 inches, but missing three times at 14 feet.   He finished with a medal in the Class AAA competition in a tie for 9th place.  Then he lost the coin flip for the inscribed medal, and he took home a blank one.   The other Wolfpack state qualifiers struggled at the meet, as well.  The 4x800 relay team of seniors Alcaeos Bolaris and Aaron Luna and juniors Jack Cross and Jack Doyle could not match their sub 8:00 effort at the sectionals either and failed to qualify for the finals, finishing in 8:08.56, 26th out of 37 teams.  In the 1600 senior Jimmy Connelly labored in the 90-degree heat, running 4:30.32, 26th out of 33 runners.  “In past years we’ve been happy just to qualify for the state meet,” said Coach Ed Ernst.  “This year we had bigger hopes.  But maybe it just takes a time or two to make bigger hopes a reality.  We’ll have big hopes again for next year.”

Sheehy Wins Illinois Top Times Decathlon

Saint Ignatius senior Jeremiah Sheehy is the new high school Jim Thorpe for the state of Illinois. At the 2010 Illinois Prep Top Times high school decathlon held on June 4th and 5th, at Benet Academy in Lisle, Sheehy scored 5591 points to defeat twelve competitors who finished the ten events. He won by almost 600 points over second place Ryan Ahern (5001 points) of Geneva, coming from behind two other competitors on the second of two days of competition to win the unofficial title of Illinois’s best high school athlete for 2010. Sheehy was in third place after the first day’s five events—100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400-meters. Each event mark is scored according to a standard international scoring chart, and he finished the first day with 2,963 points.  But Sheehy took over the points lead quickly on the second day after the 110-meter high hurdles, where he finished third.  He then posted the top marks in the pole vault and discus, and a second place mark in the javelin.  He had a commanding lead before the final event—the 1500 meters or “metric mile.” Sheehy, also a star running back for the Wolfpack football team, had been honored at the Ignatius graduation ceremonies on Thursday, May 28th, as the top male Ignatius athlete of the class of 2010.  He finished in a tie for 9th place at the Illinois High School Association state track meet in Charleston on Saturday, May 29th.  He was Chicago Catholic League champion both indoors and outdoors in the pole vault, with a personal best of 14 feet and 3 inches. Sheehy will attend the University of Miami next year, where he expects to continue with track and has hopes to play for the football team.

Trevians March Past Pack

The New Trier Trevians marched past the Pack (11-12; IHSLA 9-7) in a 14-1 win on Friday night in the second round of the Illinois state championship Class A tournament in north suburban Northfield.  After a Jake Hutton man-up goal, assisted by David King, halfway through the first quarter, the Wolfpack held the score at one goal apiece until late in the period.  The winners of the past five Illinois state Class A championships who are currently ranked #1 in Illinois and #22 in the U.S., scored a pair of goals in the last 90 seconds of the period and the home team led 3-1 after one quarter.  The Chicago team stayed within three goals of the national power until five minutes remained in the second period when the Trevians gained an advantage in play and scored three times late in the period.  Wolfpack goalie Gabe Lord played an inspired game and nabbed 13 of his 15 saves in the first half against the sharpshooting Trevians who fired 34 shots in the contest.  The champions built on their 7-1 halftime lead with a six-goal third period before adding a tally in the final set with the clock running.  Evan Mulchrone brought energy to the Wolfpack defense with seven takeaways and an equal number of groundballs but the talented winners marched like their namesake soldiers past the Wolfpack in the 14-1 win.  As the sun set on the well-coiffed New Trier Stadium, and on the 2010 season for the maroon and gold, New Trier took a step towards their sixth consecutive IHSLA championship.
