Welcome to the Sailing home page. For additional information about Sailing Team, please contact our Athletic Director - Mr. Jim Prunty at jim.prunty@ignatius.org.

Ignatius Sailing is a coed sport open to both boys and girls. No previous sailing experience is required. All that is necessary is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.

We sail in both the fall and spring. You may join Ignatius Sailing for only the fall season, only the spring season, or both seasons. The fall season starts just after Labor Day, and continues until just before Thanksgiving. The spring season begins as soon as the ice leaves the harbor in March, and continues until Memorial Day.

tagIgnatius Sailing uses Chicago Yacht Club’s coaches and facilities. We practice at Belmont Harbor with students from several other area high schools, including New Trier, Latin and Parker. We sail at least two nights a week and on Saturdays. Regatta competitions are always held on weekends.

We compete as a member of the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) which includes over 300 schools nationwide. Our Midwest region includes over 30 schools from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois. At regattas, we typically compete with 10-20 other schools from Minneapolis, Detroit, southern Wisconsin, northern Indiana and Chicago-area schools that include New Trier, Loyola, Evanston, and Lake Forest.

Regattas are most often held in the Chicago metro area, but can be as far away as Minneapolis or Detroit. Parent chaperones will always travel with the team outside metro Chicago.

We attend both “fun” and serious regattas. An important part of high school sailing is getting to know, and have fun with your teammates as you improve your sailing skills. Another is creating friendships your competitors, many of whom you will see several times a season.

tagIgnatius Sailing has a tradition of consistently being one of the top schools in the Midwest region. In a typical year, we will win one or two regattas and place in the top five in many of the other events. Also, as part of our regular regatta schedule, we compete in three qualifying events that allow the winners to attend national-level high school sailing championships.
