Close and Mulkerin Lead Wolfpack at CCL

The Pack ended its season on Saturday at the Catholic League Championships hosted by Loyola Academy. Freshmen and first year wrestlers Michael Close and Pat Mulkerin brought home some well-deserved medals this weekend. Michael Close went 3 for 4, winning his 3rd place match with a strong pin. Pat Mulkerin wrestled great defensively with a come-from-behind win to get him into the finals. At the last match of the tournament, Pat won the title with a thrilling 1-0 victory. The pups are out the den. Go Wolfpack!

Kelly-Carter 3rd at CCL Championships

The Wolfpack headed over to the Chicago Catholic League Championships at Fenwick this weekend. After wrestling in one of the toughest conferences in the country, Kyle Kelly-Carter emerged with a strong third place finish, defeating De La Salle 10-2 in the finals. The Wolfpack now have two weeks to prepare for the IHSA Regional hosted by St. Patrick on February 4th.

DiPaolo Leads Wolfpack

Coming back after a very tough Friday night, the Wolfpack traveled out to Lane Tech on Saturday morning ready to wrestle and show off their aggressive style. The Wolfpack started the morning off against Marion Catholic. Some really tough losses and some big wins set the tone of a very exciting dual meet as the Wolfpack ended up losing by a few points due to forfeits at open weight classes. Ignatius then faced the very familiar Lane Tech Indians and put on an excellent display of heart and hard-nose wrestling. Despite Lane's deep lineup and home court advantage, the Wolfpack came prepared and wrestled one their best dual meets of the year. Freshman Pat Mulkerin ended the day with two big varsity wins and Daryl Johnson wrestled two great matches as he continues to improve at the 160 pound weight class. Senior Marco DiPaolo led the team with two pins and helped carry the team on and off the mat.

Tough CCL Pushes Wolfpack

The Wolfpack continue to make their way through the very tough Chicago Catholic League schedule, facing off against the Providence Catholic Celtics and De La Salle. The Wolfpack started the night off against the ranked Providence Celtics. The Celtics came out on fire and they pushed the pace of every match. The Wolfpack made some critical mistakes that led to a tough loss. The Wolfpack then faced off against De La Salle after the tough loss to Providence. The Wolfpack got their composure back and wrestled tough against the Meteors. It was a tough night for the Wolfpack but an excellent learning experience as they prepare to face the same competition at the CCL Championships.

Pack Have Solid Break

The Wolfpack grappled hard over the Christmas break. They took park in the Providence frosh/soph tournament, a highly competitive tournament filled with several other CCL rivals. At the end of the day, only two members of the Wolfpack stood tall, Atzin Yepiz and Pat Mulkerin, both going 1-1 and placing third. Also over the break, the Wolfpack took on the Mustangs of St. Rita. The team racked up pins against St. Rita with highlights coming from Murphy O'Connor (2-0), Sal Curran (2-1) and Andrew Salinas (2-1). The Pack continue to move forward and begin to focus on the weeks ahead as the conference tournament is around the corner.

The Wolfpack faced off against the St. Rita Mustangs in their annual battle over the Christmas break. The Wolfpack wrestled very well against the experienced Mustangs. The dual meet against the Mustangs was a good test for the Wolfpack as they hand-fought their way to a well wrestled and aggressive display of wrestling.

Pack Strong at Tough Lincoln Invite

The Wolfpack headed out to Lincoln, Illinois to compete in a 26-team individual tournament. The Wolfpack came out in the first rounds of the tournament very aggressively and at the end of the first day, three Ignatius wrestlers advanced. Michael Shanahan, Kyle Kelly-Cater and Brendan Coolidge advanced through the brackets to wrestle the next day of the grueling tournament. When it was all said and done, sophomore Michael Shanahan walked away with an 8th place finish and senior Kyle Kelly-Cater placed 4th.

The Wolfpack wrested against Immaculate Conception, Kelly and St. Benedict this past Saturday, winning all three matches. Very tough matches were fought with the developed program of Kelly. Both Immaculate Conception and St. Benedict are very green programs but put up a tough battle. Highlights came from junior varsity captain Damon McHugh going 2-1.

Wolfpack Take Down Four Medals

The Wolfpack wrestled at the Simeon Tournament over the weekend. The Wolfpack only entered 4 wrestlers into the tournament due to illness and some minor injuries. Despite the low number of wrestlers in the tournament, the Wolfpack placed in the top five due to the three 1st place medals and a strong 3rd place medal. Freshman Pat Mulkerin added three more wins to his record, pinning his opponent in the finals to seize the gold. Seniors Arnold Martinez and Kyle Kelly- Cater also took first place as they continue to improve and get themselves prepared for regionals. Senior Marco PiPalo placed 3rd overall, losing a tough bout in the semi-finals, but was able to battle back and walk away with the Bronze.

The Pack started the week with a tough loss to Morton East but ended the weekend with strong victories against St. Patrick, St. Laurence and Fenwick. Long awaited victories were gutted out by Franciso Fausto and Emilio Jauregui. Atzin Yepiz ended the week going 4 for 5 with solid wrestling.

The Wolfpack hosted the very exciting quad, inviting Catholic school rivals Fenwick, St. Patrick and St. Laurence. The Wolfpack started the night facing their new regional rival St. Patrick. The Shamrocks came out very aggressively, took the Wolfpack by surprise and won some big bouts. The Wolfpack then faced Fenwick which turned out to be a very exciting dual with some very close bouts. The Wolfpack were able to bounce back from their previous loss and show their improvement as they battled the Friars, who will also be in their Regional. The Wolfpack finished the night off wrestling St. Laurence which proved to be a battle of wills after the long night of wrestling. The Wolfpack wrestled hard but were not able to pull off some really close bouts. Daryl Johnson continues to improve as he prepares to drop down to his certified weight class. Despite some really tough competition, Arnold Martinez had one of his best nights of wrestling as he continues to prepare for the Regional Championships.

The Wolfpack ended the long week end of wrestling on Saturday against Bishop McNamara. Due to some injuries and forfeits, the Wolfpack were able to pull off a win as they continue to face their Chicago Catholic League competition and prepare for the end of the year.

The Wolfpack started the week off wrestling Morton and St Joseph’s in the annual tri-dual meet at Morton East. The night began with a well wrestled dual between the Wolfpack and St. Joseph’s. The Wolfpack continue to do well wrestling on their feet and that allowed them to squeak out a team victory. The Wolfpack then wrestled Morton and even though there were some very tight bouts, Morton was able to use their home court advantage and won many of the closer bouts.

The Wolfpack headed out to the south side for the Brother Rice quad on Saturday morning for their third straight day of wrestling. The Wolfpack came in and really showed off their conditioning and stamina, aggressively attacking the competition. Whether it was a win or a loss, the Wolfpack showed off their relentless offense and finished every bout wrestling till the buzzer went off. The Wolfpack started off with two tight dual meet losses to Simeon and Brother Rice. The Wolfpack then wrestled Phillips for the last dual meet of the day and ended the long weekend of wrestling with six straight pins and a team victory. Michael Shanahan has extended his undefeated winning streak of 10-0 with 7 straight pins. Brian Walsh and Brendan Coolidge showed off their hard work with some impressive shots and intensive hand fighting.

On Saturday the Wolfpack was welcomed to the Thomas Kelly High School JV Dual tournament, a 12-team tournament of some the tough local high schools. The Wolfpack won 2 out of 3 dual matches, losing against Dunbar High School 36-34. They turned the day around by defeating Morgan Park and Eric Solorio High School. Freshmen Michael Close, Sal Curran and Patrick Mulkerin had a day filled with some hard-nosed wrestling. Sophomores Colin Sweeny and Daniel Ivaskiv showed a lot of guts wrestling through pain and injury. Double win days for Nick Portillo and Augie Fernandez rounded out a great day for the Wolfpack.

The Wolfpack’s home opener proved to be a good test of the improvements the Wolfpack have achieved. The Wolfpack wrestled both St. Francis De Sales and Amundsen and were able to come out victorious in both meets of the night.

Pack Defeat Mather; Fall to Loyola

The Wolfpack started the week off wrestling Loyola. Two big pins by Brian Walsh and Michael Shanahan gave the Wolfpack a nice jump start against the Ramblers. The dual meet continued to go back and forth until the end when the Wolfpack could not keep up with Loyola’s heavier weight classes. Kyle Kelly Carter took Loyola’s team captain into overtime and wore him down to end the match with an 8-6 victory . The Wolfpack then wrestled Mather that same night. With the adrenaline still flowing from the previous dual meet, the Wolfpack aggressively came out of the night with a solid team victory.

The Wolfpack opened up their first week of action-packed wrestling with 7 dual meet matches. On Wednesday the Wolfpack wrestled Maine South, Kelly and Taft which was a great showing of the improvements and hard work the men have put in over the past 3 weeks. Some big wins by Michael Shanahan, Daryl Johnson and Brian Walsh really set the tone for the direction of the team this season. On Saturday the Wolfpack competed in the Maine East Dual Team Tournament, facing Vernon Hills, Maine East, Maine West and Hoffman Estates. Despite a number of forfeits, the Wolfpack pushed through the tough competition and showed much improvement from match to match. Brian Walsh pulled off a huge win at a higher weight class against a Vernon Hills returning state qualifier in an overtime match. Freshman Pat Mulkerin finished the day off winning his last two bouts of the day with pins.
