Pack 9th at First to the Finish

The Wolfpack ran a good but not great race at the First to the Finish Invitational on Saturday, taking ninth place in a field of 37 3A teams—including 14 teams that show up in various state rankings. Junior Matthew Conroy was the top Wolfpack finisher in 32nd place, running a personal best time of 15 minutes and 34.2 seconds on the state course at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Senior Duncan DeProfio was number two for the Wolfpack in 60th (16:04.1), with junior Brandon Mendoza close behind in 72nd (16:11.2 PB), senior Thomas Fitzpatrick 79th (16:14.3), and senior Luke Turner 89th (16:20 PB) to round out the Wolfpack top five scoring runners. Plainfield South won First to the Finish with 48 points, as the Wolfpack scored 327 points behind Downers Grove North (71), Neuqua Valley (139), Plainfield North (153), Lyons Township (172), New Trier (224), Naperville Central (231), and Jacobs (317). “We were ranked as the ninth best team in the race on the start line, and we finished ninth,” said Coach Ed Ernst. “These are some of the biggest and best cross country teams in the state. But we honestly hoped for a better result. We will see a bunch of the teams who finished ahead of us again at Palatine in two weeks.”
