The prestigious Harper’s Weekly, published in New York, lent credence to the false story that Catherine O’Leary’s cow had kicked over a lantern and burned Chicago down.  And it added insult to injury, demonizing Mrs. O’Leary, a respected member of Fr. Arnold Damen’s parish, as “Our Lady of the Lamp.”  So much for the weekly magazine that billed itself “A Journal of Civilization”! Click here to read the full text.
