IN MEMORIAM - ANDRE K. BRAUGHER '80
The Saint Ignatius College Prep community sends its condolences to the family and friends of Andre K. Braugher '80. News agencies report he passed away December 11 after a brief battle with lung cancer.
The Wolfpack alum who was a Harlequin his junior and senior years here, went on to Stanford, then Juilliard. The path he followed eventually took him to Hollywood - where he graced the big and the small screen. His first film role was in 1989's, Glory, in which he played a free, educated black man who joined the first black regiment in the Union Army.
Television viewers will remember his roles in two notable series. In Homocide: Life on the Street he played Detective Frank Pembleton from 1993-1999. He traded the serious role for a more comedic one as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013-2021. His work earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards over the course of his career.
But for Braugher it wasn't just about the craft. It was about the people around him. Co-stars have been taking time to remember and thank the actor. On the social platform, Instagram, actor Terry Crews said, "You left us too soon...You taught me so much...You showed me what a life well-lived looks like."
Braugher was married and had three children. He grew up in Chicago, and spent formative years at Saint Ignatius College Prep, excelling at all levels. In 2002 Braugher came back to campus to visit an acting class, host an acting lesson and speak with students about his own trajectory. He received the Alumni Award of Excellence for Entertainment from Saint Ignatius College Prep in 2002, as well.
President John Chandler said, "We remember Andre Braugher and his parents fondly at Saint Ignatius. His parents valued education and made sure Andre had the best opportunities. He was an engaging young talent in many of our theatrical productions, and we are very proud of his professional accomplishments."
