The Wolfpack boys swimming and diving program uses a combination of threshold training, active rest and VO2 max swimming in addition to drylands, weights and plyo-metrics to get ready for the season. In the past 17 years, both swimming and diving teams have had 95 state qualifiers for 474 events, 121 All-Americans, 366 sectional champions and 180 conference champions. The Wolfpack swim team has been named IHSA Team Academic Achievement winners for 17 consecutive years.
The Boys Swimming and Diving season runs from mid-November to late February and is a winter sport. It has two levels frosh-soph and varsity.
Coach Justin Fernandez is building on his service to the Wolfpack. The head coach for Saint Ignatius College Prep Boys Swimming and Diving is taking on Girls Swimming and Diving, too. In the time Fernandez has been involved in Saint Ignatius Aquatics, he’s produced multiple MCAC Champions, IHSA Sectional Champs, IHSA State Finalists, and NISCA All-Americans.
Coach Fernandez, a native of Chicago, swam collegiately at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 2013-2017 and served as team captain.

Wolfpack Take 4th at IHSA State Finals
The Wolfpack placed fourth overall at the 2024 IHSA State Championship. In one of the fastest state championships on paper, the Wolfpack held their own against Illinois’ top high schools. Freshman Connor Gunderson kicked things off with a thirty-third place in the 1m diving competition. 200 Medley Relay team of Seniors Charlie Tracy, Stephen Grud, Aaron Grgurovic, and Sophomore Alistair Guth broke the school record and placed tenth overall. Senior Peter Nolan placed seventh in the 200 freestyle along with Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland who scored tenth. Senior Captain Charlie Tracy took home twelfth place in the 200 IM, rebreaking his school record from last year's state series. Senior Captain Stephen Grud was the highest-scoring wolfpack swimmer with a third place in the 50 freestyle, rebreaking his newly minted school record, and recording the fastest swim in MCAC history. Senior Aaron Grgurovic grabbed his first individual finals appearance and placed eleventh in the 100 butterfly. This was Aaron’s first time dropping under 50 seconds and tied for the third-fastest performance in school history. Sophomore Alistair Guth also competed in the 100 butterfly, scoring 33rd with a new best time. Grud and Nolan rallied with a fifth and sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle, both going 44 seconds for the first time, and Grud took down the school record. Biko Hooper-Haviland and Charlie Tracy followed suit and placed sixth and seventh in the 500 freestyle. 200 Free Relay Team of Seniors Peter Nolan, Stephen Grud, Jonathan Blackman, and Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland placed fifth in a highly contested event. The relay, in prelims, broke the school record and marked the fastest 200 free relay in MCAC history. Stephen Grud also recorded the fastest relay split in MCAC history with a 19.95 50 freestyle. Guth recorded another best time in the 100 backstroke, scoring twenty-seventh overall. 400 Free Relay Team of Biko Hooper-Haviland, Charlie Tracy, Alistair Guth, and Peter Nolan placed eleventh overall, narrowly missing the 2018 school record. IHSA Sectional Champions!!!
The Wolfpack won the 2024 IHSA Sectional Championship, marking their third consecutive IHSA Sectional title. This year's competition was something truly special with the Wolfpack breaking 6 school records, 5 meet records, and will send the following 9 athletes to the IHSA State Championships: Senior Charles Tracy, Senior Peter Nolan, Senior Stephen Grud, Senior Jonathan Blackman, Senior Aaron Grgurovic, Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland, Sophomore Carmine Fallara, Sophomore James Guth, and Freshman Connor Gunderson. Freshman Conor Gunderson won the diving competition with a score of 376; his personal best. Peter Nolan and Biko Hooper-Haviland swept the 200 free with Nolan breaking the varsity school and meet record. Charles Tracy won the 200 IM. Stephen Grud won the 50 free and broke the varsity school record. Jonathan Blackman was third in the 50 with a personal best and first time under the 22-second mark. Aaron Grgurovic and James Guth placed second and third in the 100 butterfly with new personal bests. Nolan and Grud swept the 100 free, both going personal bests, and Nolan captured his third school record in the event. Hooper-Haviland and Tracy swept the 500 free with Hooper-Haviland breaking the meet record. Guth and Blackman were second and fifth in the 100 backstroke, both going best times. Carmine Fallara and Rohan Robinson went double best times in the 100 breast with Fallara scoring third and Robinson eighth. The 200 Medley Relay team of Tracy, Grud, Grgurovic, and Guth reset the newly minted school record and scored the victory over Jones-Payton. The 200 Free Relay of Nolan, Hooper-Haviland, Blackman, and Grud won and broke the school record. 400 Free Relay Hooper-Haviland, Tracy, Guth, and Nolan routed the field, won, and are within 1.5 seconds of the school record.Read More -
Wolfpack Win 4th Straight MCAC Championships!!!
The Wolfpack completed the dynasty with a four-peat conference championship title this past weekend! It was the largest margin of victory across the four straight championship wins. Freshman Connor Gunderson led off on Friday night with a first place finish in the 1m diving competition. His score of 365.30 ranks #5 all time in school history. Leading off Saturday, the relay team of Sophomore Alistair Guth, Sophomore Carmine Fallara, Senior Aaron Grgurovic, and Senior Jonny Blackman scored a critical second place in the 200 medley relay. Senior Captain Peter Nolan defended his title in the 200 freestyle with Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland securing third with an in-season best time. Senior Captain Charlie Tracy was runner up in the 200 IM with Guth moving up two spots to claim fourth. Guth’s 200 IM ranks him #5 all time performer in school history. Senior Captain Stephen Grud won the 50 freestyle with a 20.96, moving to #3 all time in school history. Blackman and Fallara also scored in the 50 freestyle with a third place and eighth place finish. Guth and Grgurovic stepped up big time to claim 3rd and 4th in the 100 butterfly, Guth’s 52.48 performance was #9 in school history. Nolan and Grud swept the 100 freestyle with in season best times, winning by more than a second. Tracy and Hooper-Haviland pulled off an epic sweep of the 500 freestyle with Hooper-Haviland moving the #3 Saint Ignatius all time performer in the event. The relay team of Nolan, Grud, Guth, and Tracy won the 200 freestyle relay, just missing the pool record set by Saint Ignatius in 2021. Blackman and Senior Connor Burke teamed up to place third and eighth in the 100 backstroke, moving up a few positions for each and going best times. Fallara and Junior Rohan Robinson followed suit and went best times in the 100 breaststroke to place third and eighth. Fallara’s 1:00.99 solidifies him #7 in the top 10 best performers in school history. Relay team of Grud, Nolan, Hooper-Haviland, and Tracy close out the meet with a 400 freestyle relay win and further improve their highly ranked freestyle relay ranking. Pack Out Swim Dolphins on Senior Night
Saint Ignatius won their senior night against Whitney Young 124-56. Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland and Freshman Charlie Cali split the 200 free for first and third. Senior Captains Charlie and Peter Nolan swept the 200 IM. Senior Captain Stephen Grud and Senior Jonny Blackman also swept the 50 freestyle. Senior Aaron Grgurovic and Sophomore Alistair Guth continued that momentum and swept the 100 fly. Freshman Connor Gunderson and T’Raji Morris won the 6m dive, both with in season best. Tracy, Hooper-Haviland, and Senior Danny Duff went first through third in 100 freestyle. Nolan and Grud split the 500 freestyle with both going best in-season times. Wolfpack Almost Sweep Tri-Angular
The Wolfpack defeated Fenwick Friars (107-64) and the Brother Rice Crusaders (107-11), winning 11 out of 12 events. Senior Captains Peter Nolan and Charlie Tracy swept the 200 freestyle. Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland and Sophomore Alistair Guth followed suit and swept the 200 IM. Senior Captain Stephen Grud teamed up with fellow senior, Jonny Blackman, to split the 50 freestyle for first and third. Senior Aaron Grgurovic along with Guth went first and second in the 100 butterfly. Nolan and Grud scored top 2 in the 100 freestyle. Tracy and Hooper-Haviland routed the field in the 500 free. An in-season best, Hooper-Haviland is now ranked Top 4 500 freestyle performer in Saint Ignatius history. Senior Jonny Blackman won the 100 backstroke with fellow senior Owen Brown scoring fourth. Pack Win and Break Two Records at Windy City Showdown
The Wolfpack defeated Jones-Payton Co-op in one of the most exciting dual meets of the season walking away with a win 103-89 and establishing two team records. Medley Relay team of Seniors Charlie Tracy, Stephen Grud, Aaron Grgurovic, and Peter Nolan broke the 200 medley relay school record that was set in 2009. Freshman Charlie Cali and Senior Owen Brown split for a first and third place in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland placed second in the 200 IM, breaking 2:00 for the first time. Nolan and Grud went season bests in the 50 freestyle and swept the event. Freshman T’Raji Morris placed third in the 1m diving competition. Tracy, Grgurovic, Grud, and Sophomore Carmine Fallara swept the 100 butterfly with three out of the four establishing new best times. The Wolfpack won the Steve Allen Invitational on Saturday at Lockport. Winning 10 out of 12 events, The Wolfpack scored 537 points overall. Freshman Connor Gunderson placed fifth in the 1m diving competition. Senior Peter Nolan and Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland swept the 200 freestyle. Senior Charlie Tracy won the 200 IM. Senior Captain Stephen Grud won the 50 freestyle. Senior Aaron Grgurovic won the 100 butterfly with Sophomore James Guth placing third. Nolan and Grud swept the 100 freestyle. The Wolfpack won the Riverside Brookfield Invitational with multiple event wins and 2 pool records. Senior Captains Peter Nolan and Charlie Tracy swept the 200 freestyle. Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland and Sophomore Alistair Guth went best times and placed second and third in the 200 IM. Senior Captain Stephen Grud won the 50 freestyle with fellow Senior Jonathan Blackman scoring 7th. Nolan and Senior Aaron Grgurovic split for an event win and 3rd place in the 100 butterfly. Grud and Guth took first and fifth place in the 100 freestyle. Tracy and Hooper-Haviland swept the 500 freestyle distance event. Blackman and Freshman Charlie Cali scored 8th and 9th with Cali going a best time in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Carmine Fallara went a best time in the 100 breaststroke with fellow Junior Rohan Robinson securing fifth with an in-season best. The Pack placed third at the 58th Annual Evanston Invitational, marking the Wolfpack highest placing performance of all time. Leading off the meet was team of Sophomore Alistair Guth, Sophomore Carmine Fallara, Senior Aaron Grgurovic, and Senior Jonny Blackman scored 10th in the 200-medley relay. Senior Captain Peter Nolan and Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland placed second and fifth in the 200 freestyle. Senior Captain Charlie Tracy placed double third place in the 200 IM. Freshman Charlie Cali went a personal best and scored twenty-sixth in the 200 IM. Senior Captain Stephen Grud won the 50 freestyle with Blackman scoring fifteenth. Grgurovic and Guth scored seventh and thirteenth in the 100 butterfly. Nolan and Grud grabbed a big 1-2 finish to sweep the 100 freestyle. Tracy and Hooper-Haviland placed third and fifth in the 500 freestyle. The team of Nolan, Grud, Guth, and Tracy won the 200 freestyle relay, narrowly missing the meet record set by Neuqua Valley in 2008. Guth and Blackman placed tenth and nineteenth in the 100 backstroke. The breaststroke duo of Fallara and Junior Rohan Robinson placed twenty-first and seventeenth in the 100 breaststroke, marking in-season best times. The Pack defeated Whitney Young in a sprint dual meet 129-27. The format is unlike most dual meets with competitors swimming up to 5 events in either the 50 or 100 distance. Senior Aaron Grgurovic won the 100 butterfly, establishing a new pool record. Senior Captain Stephen Grud won the 100 freestyle, also establishing a new pool record. Wolfpack Stop Marmion and Br. Rice in Tri-Angular
The Wolfpack defeated both Marmion (93-69) and Brother Rice (114-48). Senior Captain Peter Nolan had the double victory in the 200 and 100 freestyle. Senior Captain Stephen Grud placed second in the 100 free and won the 50 freestyle with Senior Jonny Blackman scoring third. Blackman later placed second in the 100 backstroke with Senior Owen Brown securing third. Senior Aaron Grgurovic won the 100 butterfly. Wolfpack Sweep Highland Park Invite
The Wolfpack won both A and B levels at the Highland Park Don Davis Giant Invite. In the Flight A division, Senior Captain Peter Nolan broke 3 meet records and won the high-point competition. Senior Captain Charlie Tracy was second overall and won the 50 backstroke. Senior Captain Stephen Grud was third with two runner-up performances. In the Flight B division, Sophomore Carmine Fallara won the high-point competition. Fallara won all four 50 sprint events and third place in the 150 freestyle. Second and third place high point awards went to Senior Owen Brown and Freshman Charlie Cali. Brown was a triple event runner up and Cali had mixed second and third place finishes and won the 150 freestyle event.Read More -
Madison West Edges Pack
The Wolfpack fell to Madison West with a score of 110.5-119.5. In a non-traditional event line up, both the Wolfpack and Regents went off script and made this meet a sprint classic dual. Saint Ignatius won all the 200 medley, 500 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relays. Freshman Alistair Guth won the 100 freestyle and the 25 backstroke. Senior Jonny Blackman scored double silver in the 25 backstroke and 25 breaststroke. Senior Captain Charlie Tracy won the skins 50 backstroke and was second in the 100 IM. Senior Aaron Grgurovic, Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland, and Sophomore Carmine Fallara swept the 25 butterfly. Senior Captain Stephen Grud and Grgurovic took second and third place the 25 freestyle. The Wolfpack tied Loyola Academy with a score of 84.5 points. Senior Captain Peter Nolan won both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Senior Captain Stephen Grud won the 50 and 100 freestyles. Senior Captain Charlie Tracy won the 500 freestyle. Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland scored double silver in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Sophomore Alistair Guth picked up a second place in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 freestyle. Senior Jonny Blackman scored second in the 50 freestyle. Pack Place 2nd at Chicago Quad
The Wolfpack went 3-1 at the Chicago Quad Meet at the University of Chicago. The Pack defeated Jones-Payton 190-182 and U-High 205-169 but fell to Lane Tech 208-176. Leading Ignatius was Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland won the 200 freestyle and was second in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Alistair Guth won the 100 freestyle and was a key leg on all three relays. Freshman Connor Gunderson was runner-up in the diving competition. Wolfpack Take 2nd to Open Season
The Pack opened the season with a second place overall at the Warrior Relays at Deerfield High School on Friday. Freshman Connor Gunderson was the Wolfpack’s solo diver who scored 197.35 points to take fourth overall. The Wolfpack picked up a win in the 500 freestyle crescendo relay with Sophomore Alistair Guth, Senior Owen Brown, Freshman Charlie Cali, and Junior Biko Hooper-Haviland. Saint Ignatius picked up five other relay runner-up performances and two third-place finishes.
