School Architect Discovered

Hermann von Langen has been identified as the architect of record for the original St. Ignatius College building (1867-69) now occupied by Saint Ignatius College Prep at 1076 W. Roosevelt Road.
The building is a survivor of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Richard von Langen, the great-great grandson of the architect, recently visited the school, to accept on behalf of his family, a framed Certificate of Recognition.

Research conducted by Chicago historian and author, Ellen Skerrett, in Jesuit archives and other sources uncovered this information and a request is being made to the U.S. Department of Interior’s National Register of Historic Places to correct the record and replace “architect unknown” with Hermann von Langen’s name.
