Inaugural Listening Conference - A “Treemendous” Success

Saint Ignatius College Prep (Chicago) sponsored an innovative conference entitled, Guanacaste 2022: The Transformational Listening Conference.
Guanacaste is Spanish for “Listening Tree” and it is the national tree of Costa Rica (rich coast). The global goal of the Listening Conference is to make the world rich with listeners.

The Friday, April 22, 2022, Pre-Conference kicked off with the student-led Tremendous Listener Awards Ceremony. There, students in the Saint Ignatius Listening Society recognized and honored teachers whom they nominated as "tremendous" listeners (Guanacaste trees) in their lives. Students planned, prepared, and presented the awards program, as well as served as greeters, emcee, musical performers, and introducer of the keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Nimo.

On Saturday, April 23, 2022, the program opened with a presentation by the internationally recognized listening expert, Dr. Graham Bodie, followed by an autism awareness panel discussion and varied workshops on restorative listening circles; spiritual direction, bridge-building, job interviewing skills, and diversity, equity, and inclusion from a listening perspective.

Participant feedback showed great delight at the rich content and robust camaraderie experienced during the Spring 2022 event. The most oft-repeated refrain was: "I've never attended a Listening Conference before, and I look forward to the next one." To that end, the Fall Listening Conference is scheduled for October 2022. As with the Spring event, all junior-/senior-high schools, colleges, parents, students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited.
