YES WE CAN!

Kristyn Hartman
"Sí, se puede."
The translation of the slogan is "Yes, we can." Chances are you've heard it. The motto of the United Farm Workers has become the mantra for other activist groups. And it all started with Dolores Huerta.
She co-founded the UFW, and as a labor leader and social justice champion, brought "Sí, se puede" into our country's dialogue.

In her 92 years, Huerta has been a voice and an advocate for immigrants, workers and women. On Ash Wednesday, she talked about leading a life dedicated to others, with students and staff at Saint Ignatius College Prep.

"Instead of talking and learning about history - make history. That is activism," said Huerta.

With her trademark energy, Huerta encouraged the young people who gathered in Tully Hall, and who called her a hero, to spread a message about the importance of voting and people power.

"A vote is a vote for your future," said Huerta, "This country is yours, and you have to protect it."

Those words, and Huerta's visit meant a great deal to student Giselle Quezada '24. She said, "I just really appreciate to get this chance to hear from her, and to meet her and understand she really does care. It was enlightening because being in the groups she fights for, the passion she has, touched me a lot."
