Garduno Makes History at IHSA State Finals

Competing in her second IHSA State Finals at Grossinger Arena in Bloomington. Junior GG Garduno made history as she became the first female wrestler to place at the IHSA State Finals while becoming the state runner-up at 145 pounds to equal the feat of Saint Ignatius Hall of Famer, Pat Lukanich who was also a state runner-up in 2001 at 140 pounds. In her two day historic run, Garduno defeated Louisa Enslen of Wheaton Warrenville by fall at 2:49 after being up 11-4 in round one. Her second test on Friday also ended by fall against Taylor Sutton of East Peoria at 5:39 up 11-0 to seal her place in the final four for Saturday. On Saturday, GG was down quickly 3-0, 6-1 and even down 10-1 before pulling off an amazing reversal move and pinning Natalie Corona out of McHenry at 3:23 down 10-4. Garduno's historic run came to end in the finals against senior Natalie Beaumont of Toledo. After a hot start going up 7-0 and eventually 8-3, Beaumont charged to the lead to go up 15-10 as she ran out the clock to defeat Garduno. Congratulations to GG on her 33-3 overall record and amazing run at the IHSA State Finals!
