Sam Dixon is a dedicated health teacher at Saint Ignatius College Prep, currently in his second year at the institution. With an impressive teaching career spanning over 40 years, he brings a wealth of experience and passion to the classroom and gymnasium. Mr. Dixon is responsible for instructing two classes: Total Wellness 1 and Weightlifting 1 and 2 (which also includes an Honors section). His approach to teaching is deeply rooted in his genuine enjoyment of being around young people. He said, “I love getting to spend each day with members of the Wolfpack. They are a special group of students.”
Having lived in various locations across the Midwest, Mr. Dixon has developed a rich understanding of diverse perspectives—a trait he values in his interactions with students. His objective transcends conventional teaching; he sees each class as a unique opportunity to foster growth and maturity among his students. By the end of the semester, Mr. Dixon aims for his students not only to have learned crucial information but also to have internalized those lessons in a way so that they can apply them throughout their lives.
Mr. Dixon is committed to creating an environment that encourages personal development and well-being, reinforcing the importance of health education in shaping conscientious and informed individuals who can lead a healthy lifestyle. In Mr. Dixon’s classes, students are not merely learners; they are future leaders equipped with valuable life skills.
“My favorite thing about working at Saint Ignatius College Prep is the diversity of the students who study here,” says Mr. Kevin Lombard, Total Wellness teacher. “Our students travel to school from all over Chicago and the suburbs to come together and form a unique and collaborative environment.”
Mr. Lombard teaches health and physical education in the department, as well as activity electives such as weightlifting, boxing, and cycling. “Our goal is to give the students the tools they need to maintain physical and mental wellness throughout their lives,” he says. “That includes knowledge about nutrition and drug awareness, as well as showing them ways that they can have fun while being healthy.”
Mr. Lombard joined Saint Ignatius by coincidence. Ms. Maura Maloney’s brothers owned the restaurant where Mr. Lombard was working at the time in his hometown of Michigan City and told him about the job. “I have been reflecting on how lucky I was to be able to join this staff,” he shares, “and what it’s meant to me to be here since then.”
One of the highlights of Mr. Lombard’s time at Saint Ignatius College Prep was partnering with Ray Graham High School to participate in the IHSA Unified Special Olympics, a competition where Ignatians participate with students with intellectual disabilities. “Seeing the students immediately excited was something that was very valuable for me,” he shares. “It was something that was an embodiment of the Mission we have here.”
